13 Reasons Why I Eat Paleo
I first learnt about paleo in 2009. It made sense so I started following the “80/20″ principle to help me transition. This year, I went full paleo; eliminating dairy, cutting out regular cheat meals and making better food choices. By eating a stricter paleo diet I’ve never felt better. Check out my lucky 13 reasons why I eat paleo…
- No more bloating – I used to suffer from stomach pains after carb heavy meals. Since eating paleo these symptoms have completely disappeared. No more cramps, inflammation or shooting pains.
- Clearer skin – I used to have a constant spot which I thought would be with me forever. Now my skin looks and feels healthier. Paleo has succeeded where Clearasil couldn’t.
- Meals are more satisfying – I feel much more happier with a balanced, paleo meal. I hardly ever snack and only eat when I’m hungry. By having protein with every meal I’m kept full.
- More energy – Foods help sustain energy levels throughout the day with no afternoon slump. (Cutting out chronic cardio also helps).
- Shopping is easier – I don’t have to worry about reading food labels or hidden ingredients. Instead I am much more aware of what I’m eating and the effect it’s having on my body.
- No headaches – I can’t remember the last time I had one. This coming from someone who always woke up with my head throbbing. I felt like I was always having to take pain relief which I hated.
- Treats are more sensible – A treat for me is now a (paleo) dessert or a few squares of dark chocolate. I can eat these without feeling guilty. Lindt 90% is my new best friend.
- More confident about long-term health – Knowing what I eat now is helping protect against chronic illnesses later in life. I want to be healthy when I’m older and I feel like I could eat paleo for the rest of my life.
- More nutrients – I eat a wide assortment of foods. Different colours, varieties and all packed with a great range of beneficial nutrients and minerals.
- Better welfare for animals – I like to know that the animals were reared in good conditions. I try to buy grass-fed and free range where possible. I don’t want to see animals caged or force fed in industrial factories.
- No counting calories - Paleo doesn’t feel like a diet. I can happily eat great food at any meal without feeling like I am restricting or denying myself. There is more choice than you think.
- Better tasting food – I use more natural ingriedients than ever before and eat more produce that’s in season. I try to buy locally when I can. The food is higher quality and you can taste the difference.
- Less body fat – I have been able to shed excess body fat by eating paleo and am now able to maintain an easy and stable body weight. I eat what I want and don’t have to check the scales every day.

I eat Paleo because, amongst other things, I feel better when I do. Like Ellie I now don’t really suffer from bloating, I get fewer headaches and blocked up nose. I suffer fewer sinus problems in general. I got through last winter working in an open plan office without a single cold. Not one day of cold medicine to get through the day at work. I am confident that I am eating a good diet because I know I’ve swapped grains for more nutrient dense foods

I also love that there is no after meal crash. I totally forgot about those.

I agree with all of your reasons for the Paleo life, which is why I have been trying it for about the past 3-4 months. I try to follow the 80/20 rule as well, however, I have not lost a pound. In fact, I think I gained a few. As part of my Paleo transition, I quit doing spin class in the gym, bought a bike and cycle outdoors 2-3 times per week. I’m not doing the chronic cardio I used to and I eat so much better than I used to. I am overweight so I know I have fat that should be coming off.
While I’m not following Paleo specifically to lose weight, I would think if I’m overweight that the pounds would be coming off. Any ideas for things I could tweak?

Thanks Ellie, I’ll give your tweaks a shot! Cheers

Hi Ellie,
I am trying Paleo for the first time. Your 13 reason’s are inspirational!! I do have a question about eggs….How many can I have in a day, week whether in a breakfast recipe or not??
-
Hello Ellie,
I have tried to eat paleo twice before but failed on both accounts, mostly due to low-carb induced fatigue, and crankiness. I began dreaming about pizza and pasta after a week of strict paleo. I was wondering if you experienced symptoms of a carb withdrawal as well.
I am trying to eat paleo once again, but have been advised against this by a nutritionist who claims that grains and dairy offer nutrients not found in the paleo diet. Also, he advised against the high levels of animal fats I will be ingesting, which could possibly lead to heart problems later in life. What is your opinion on this matter? Do you believe that animal fats are unhealthy? If so, how would you fill up the calorie deficit? -

I try and spread the word as much as I can on how much better I feel as think Paleo could benefit a lot of people.

Definitely. Grains are are big ‘no no’ for me. I rarely get ill now. That’s great that you’ve got rid of sinus problems. I’m sure it will the same this winter too

Yes, it’s really noticeable isn’t it. So good feeling perky all day. No more trying to keep my eyes open after lunch.

Hi Leslie, to begin with I would try going full paleo for 30 days instead of 80/20. Make sure you are eating lean protein with plenty of colourful veg. You may want to try a small calorie restriction and ease up on the fruit if you’re eating this moderately. Also, getting lots of sleep each night will help. Your training regime sounds fine and you should be able to achieve weight loss through 90% diet so hopefully these changes will help. If you need any other advice feel free to e-mail me

Hi Shani. So pleased you’re joining the paleo tribe – it’s the way forward
There’s no real limit to how many eggs you can consume. Some days I’ll have 3 or 4 and other days I won’t have any. Other people eat a lot more – maybe 4-8 a day. If you tolerate them well then it should be no problem. Robb Wolf says don’t worry about them, just don’t plan to eat them every day for the rest of your life!

Hi Jong, yeah it took me a little while to fully convert to paleo. I didn’t do the strict approach, instead I did 80/20 with a more relaxed meal or two at the weekends. That way I could satisfy any cravings (usually bread!) that were building up during the week. I know a lot of people have success doing something like a strict 30 day challenge but maybe 80/20 would be worth trying to start with?
If you feel like you’re lacking energy it may just be a phase or carb flu or it may just be too little food. I try to eat a decent amount of protein at each meal and LOADS of veggies, big salads, good oils and some fruit to get in the calories.
As for the nutrition side – there is nothing in grains and dairy that you can’t find in a natural source. Fibre, calcium & vitamins can all be found in meat & vegetables. Here’s a good round up of info on cholesterol / heart disease. Short story – fat doesn’t make you fat and doctors/ nutritionists should stop following outdated research. http://chriskresser.com/heartdisease
I hope that helps, it’s great that you are giving paleo another try. Remember that you are used to a lifetime of conventional foods. Sometimes little steps and refinements can be just as effective to get longer term sucess
